Apple issued an important software update to the iPhone on Thursday.

Highlights of this much-welcomed update include:

1. Enhanced Google Maps by providing “street view”, instructions for public transit and walking, and sharing location through email.

2. Improved call quality by reducing call setup failures and dropped calls.

3. Enhanced Mail features by fixing isolated issues with scheduled fetching of email, better wide HTML email formatting.

4. Enabling direct podcast downloads via WIFI or mobile internet.

5. Better Safari and improved Visual Voicemail.

The update will also enable users to take a shortcut from any Home screen back to your first Home screen by pressing the Home button.

Another key benefit of the update is that it provides iPhone users to a choice to turn on/off auto-correction in keyboard settings.

Get complete info on the update at the Apple website.

  • So do you go out and throw down on a fully-featured RF remote to control your home automation gizmos, or do you get one of those snazzy wall-mounted keypads installed to handle the same duties? Frankly, we’d recommend option C, which would involve picking up a device that operates as both depending on your mood. Universal Remote Control’s KP-900 is one such unit, which easily snaps into and out of a wall mount for use in both of the aforementioned scenarios. Furthermore, there’s even a built-in LCD which showcases relevant activities depending on what main selection you make first. As with everything else spotted in the FCC, you’ll have to wait a tick longer before finding out a price or release date, but it looks like this bugger may actually be worth holding out for.

  • Don’t pretend that you’ve “thrown away” or “misplaced” your old iPod nano / Shuffle case — we know you Apple folk respect Cupertino’s packaging just as much as what’s inside (we kid, we kid). If you just so happen to have the case that your first- or second-generation nano / second- or third-generation Shuffle came in, Bird Electron’s EZ17-B speaker will give it a new reason for hanging around. Apparently, the speaker simply slips into the old case and gets its power from whatever DAP you attach to it. ‘Course, this leads us to believe that you won’t be rockin’ any after-prom parties with just one of these bad boys, but it should do the trick in the backseat of a car. Still, we’ve got better things to do with $39.99 than spend it on this, but to each his / her own, right?
